Lotte – Aiding Independence in Old Age

We should all be independent in getting up and sitting down, no matter our age or ability. However, due to age-related impairments this becomes challenging for many elderly people, limiting their freedom in everyday life. With its extended armrests that go all around and serve as a handrail, this armchair enables the user to get up intuitively in a position with minimal resistance. The design has been developed based on research carried out in care homes, prototype testing with residents and evaluations from medical and care experts.

Statement of the jury

The extended armrests of the »Lotte« chair allow users to get up intuitively using their own strength. An ingenious design that is so subtle that it doesn’t stigmatise.
